Or, getting in touch with my Southern heritage
This is the first food post I’ve made since getting my new DSLR camera. I still have no idea how to use it but it doesn’t seem like the photos are any worse than what I was doing with the point and shoot, so I feel like we’re off to a good start. After I figure out how to make it take a picture every time I want it to, then I’ll work on framing and composition and focus. Actually, I realized I don’t think I will master manual focus until I start wearing my glasses all of the time and not only when driving. Pah.
But enough about me, let’s talk peanuts.
By brine they mean really salty water. The can says that these are the South’s favorite snack but I have my doubts considering I’ve lived here for ages and ages and nobody has ever offered me any.
I really just included this picture so I could say ha-ha they said Effingham. Reminds me of the Amster Amster Shh shh shh song.
Effing
Effing
Ham ham ham
I didn’t say that naughty word, I didn’t say that naughty word.
Anyway, if anyone is live in Effingham I come visit.
I did take the peanuts inside to cook them but didn’t get a picture because honestly it wasn’t worth cleaning my cooktop to take one.
Before I cooked them, I must note that this one made me feel quite queasy
And this one reminded me of a turtle poking his head out of the water, confused to find himself in the land of giant nuts.
Cooked and drained. Note the smell was not pleasant, however it was neither strong nor overpowering. I had to bend down to get a whiff.
Some opened nice and neat and others smooshed and broke.
I made a fishy!
And the taste? Really salty. Mealy. A hint of peanut taste but the texture was all wrong. Sort of like a lima bean and a peanut had a salty, slippery skinned baby.
I didn’t find it horrible and I imagine they’d be much better fresh. Don’t believe I’ll be snacking on them regularly but if offered, I wouldn’t turn them down.
I bought this can at Dollar Tree. If you can’t find them locally, you can order them boiled green peanuts from the Margaret Holmes website or order from Amazon. (affiliate link. I have to pay for my Dollar Tree habit somehow)
Have you ever tried boiled peanuts? What would you say is the South’s favorite snack?
PS Notice how I am classy and didn’t make any boiled nuts jokes. That is because women still know how to be ladies here in the 901.

I wonder if your boiled nuts would go well with your spotted dick?
The 216 isn’t as classy.

And you wonder why LeBron left you.
Wait was that where you are or someplace else. I’m still confused by the whole matter.
The problem is they are canned. Fresh boild peanuts are the bomb! I am very surprised you have not seen any at ballgames or festivals for sale. They are my favorite snack during football season.
I never go to ball games, too afraid of balls. All it takes is one time to get smacked in the mouth while wearing braces and you’re ball shy forever.
Also, kind of have funnel cake blindness.
Never had boiled peanuts. Don’t plan to.
Think of it as Southern Edamame.
I’ve had boiled peanuts, see no reason to again.

You know, that’s how I feel. I’m satisfied that I had the experience, would not go out of my way to do it again. Although I would try fresh ones if I happened across some.
GREAT pictures though!!
You’re too kind. I swear, I haven’t figured out how to consistently make it go click yet! It will be fun to properly learn photography though.
I swear that I noticed a peanut smell as soon as I opened this post. And it was not good.

It’s much better than the smell of canned pupa. Every now and again I’ll get a phantom whiff of it. Ewwww.
Boiled peanuts…yuck! I’ve never actually eaten one, but my husband likes them. I don’t think he’s had the canned ones, though.
Linda, I’m wondering if they would have ever become so popular if they were only available in cans!
Makes me wonder if they have any warnings on the can that say “May contain peanuts”…

It actually does, Christopher!
The one that made you feel queasy made me feel queasy too. What was that smeggy stuff anyway? Wait. don’t tell me. I really don’t want to know.

Awww buck up, Dave, it was only a piece of peanut skin. Heh. Nut skin. Heh.
I’ve eaten boiled peanuts before and I seem to remember liking them. They weren’t the canned variety though.
I drove through Effingham last month. It seemed like a nice place. I posted a list of interesting English town names on my blog not so long ago.

Lovelyn, you could make an entire blog just out of pictures of English town road signs! Thanks for the link, I want to go to Upper Dicker!
Oh, hi! I’m done throwing up now.
I had to read the label in that 2d photo 100 times before I realized that it did NOT say “Drain liquid shell and eat.”
But then the shells DO look liquidy. And why do the peanuts so closely resemble turtles and fish? Disturbing.
This mess is far too gelatinous for me to get mixed up with.
JD at I Do Things´s last blog ..Professor JD Answers Your Questions so you don’t have to
JD, for once it wasn’t nearly as gelatinous as it looked. No idea about why they look like turtles and fish but I assume that there is a proper Darwinian explanation.
I like boiled peanuts, but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t like them from a can.
Chicka, more and more I’m realizing that the canned version is almost never as good as the fresh. Kind of like movies vs. books, I guess.
Except that niblets are better than corn on the cob.
I’ve had both versions of peanuts (both that I know): roasted and boiled. They are totally a different species from one another. In the end, I prefer the roasted kind. Perhaps I chicken out too early, but at least I love peanuts nonetheless.
Gina @ Wis Dells Lodging´s last blog ..Great Wolf Lodge Resort
Gina, I think the roasted are better, too. I think almost every food is better roasted than boiled.
Yikes. I am all about TEXTURE when it comes to food. I mean the flavor has to be good as well, but TEXTURE is extremely important to me. And I probably would have gagged on something that was so Mealy!
meleah rebeccah´s last blog ..Writing Rituals And The Muse
Meleah, it’s so true. Very rarely has the taste of anything made me gag, but the texture is a totally different story.
Hi Tracey – I have never tried these & I’m not sure we can get them in the UK. I love peanuts but the idea of boiling them in their shells isn’t appealing and they look a bit gross in your pics.
Cath Lawson´s last blog ..New Business Mistakes- The Hidden Startup Killers
Cath, make no mistake, they looked a bit gross in real life, too. But so does shepherd’s pie so I thought I’d give it a go anyway. Unlike shepherd’s pie, my bravery was not rewarded in this case.
They might be good fresh, though, maybe they are like edamame?
Haha. I saw these in a store in AL. I wasn’t going to fall for it though.
My favorite Southern snack has to be fried Coke.
Hi Darius! I sense a road trip to Alabama is in order. I can drive through Mississippi and look for some Koolickles, too!
I can’t wait until the green peanuts are ready. I lov’em green, then when I get a belly full, I start boiling them. I freeze enough every year to tide me over.
