I LOVED the bubblegum cigarettes! Especially (like you say) how you could blow out a puff of powdered sugar smoke.

Same as Popeye cigarettes...when they used to be called "cigarettes" and not lame-ass "Candy Sticks". And they even had that little dab of red dye on the end to simulate the lit end.

Of course, that would NEVER fly with today's bleeding-heart parents and PC-granola crunchers. Because apparently that glorifies smoking, and forces kids into a life of chain-smoking and lung cancer by the time they're 15.

Funny, though, how me and my friends all grew up all kinds of "bad influences" like that. Yet we never smoked, and never will.

It's amazing to me how clear my memories of those times were when things that happened just a year or two ago hardly register.

Oh but I did! And freshen up gum (the kind with the liquid center)!

Do you think I could get people to pay to watch a webcam of me eating pop rocks and drinking soda at the same time?

Oh my, the nostalgia is almost too much, and I wasn't even born until 1980! Suddenly I'm remembering the taste and feel of candy cigarettes. How funny. I did end up smoking. I suspect that had more to do with my chain smoking mother, and everyone else around me, than the candy. Haven't done it in years. Real cigarettes are gross. I could totally go for a candy one right about now though.

I remember the candy cigarettes. I smoked them regularly as a kid. Two packs a day--or something like that. Oddly, I do not smoke now.

Those hotdogs are scary.

Too bad you didn't get any pop rocks in your care packages.

Doesn't it? We used to have a kind of gum here in the states that was modeled on chewing tobacco, too. What were they thinking?

Oh yes, we did have a donut man and it was just as awesome as you'd imagine! Double as awesome. We lived in a second floor apartment, so whenever we'd hear one of the various treat delivery vehicles come down the street, we'd buzz our parents on the intercom and they'd throw money down to us. Well my dad always would, my mom was known to say no sometimes or actually buy fruit and vegetables. I will have to get my brother and sister in here to confirm.

And don't you read your own blog comments? I already have 7 or 8 caramel Milky Ways. Try harder. :)

YOU HAD A DONUT MAN???

Okay, now that I've got that out of my system, I want that box. I'll trade you eight, er, seven Caramel Milky Ways. PLEASE?

God, I remember those cigarettes, and I can just TASTE them. They weren't very good. As you say, the appeal was the whole "pretend you're smoking thing."

Oh, how fun. I do hope it helps to lift your spirits a bit.
