I have obtained a copy of Just Busted

by Tracy

Or, come on, somebody had to look into this

Just Busted Dec 29th edition front page

Just Busted Dec 29th edition front page

My husband picked this up for me from Mapco last week. You know what the main benefit to being married to me is besides all the food experiments? Getting to go out and buy trashy periodicals that your wife is too embarrassed to be seen buying.  In my defense, I usually have 2-4 small children with me and it really isn’t seemly to be buying such things while your children are running around like Tasmanian devils at the checkout. I don’t even like to buy soda or cookies when I’m out with them and they are in such a mood because I can just feel people behind us giving each other knowing looks and nodding.

I wonder how they pick the mugshots to put on the front page? I picture a smokey room with one of those old timey light tables and a bunch of slides and a couple of grizzled old timey newspaper guys wearing suspenders and smoking cigars while they try to get the right balance of pretty young things to wild eyed PCP users.

One of the things I like to do when flipping through a new publication is note the advertisers. It can tell you a lot about who their readers are. This ad makes sense even though it cracked me up how it was plunked right down in the middle of the wall of arrested folks on the front page.

Um, yeah, it’s good to know you don’t need a title to get cash for your junk cars. I am intrigued by Lou Jacks and their promise of tender and tasty food and might make a visit even though every time I go down Winchester Rd I swear never again because people just plain forget how to drive the minute they turn on to it. Memphis people, you know what I mean, right?

It’s good to be reminded that redemption is possible. It would have been nice if they’d included a coupon like Lou Jacks. $25 is a lot of money to come to Jesus!

They had seasonal features like the Holiday Drunk Tank.

Sex Offenders Near Grahamwood Elementary School

Sex Offenders Near Grahamwood Elementary School

I pictured this being read by Chris Hansen, sort of like this: They are ALL, however, registered SEX offenders. Something interesting I noticed, most of the arrests for prostitution were “prostitution near church/school”. I think there was just one plain prostitution arrest. I didn’t notice this distinction with any other crimes. I wonder if there is any difference in sentence? Does this apply to Temples and Mosques, too?

A couple of people were also charged with “Initiation Meth Manufacture Process” but nobody seemed to have made it up to step 2 of Meth Manufacturing Process. I guess it’s good they are catching them at the beginning of the process.

Just Busted Cash Reward

Just Busted Cash Reward

This guy seems like he stepped out of a 1970s era blaxploitation flick. I hope they catch him, assuming he is guilty. When you call in a crime stoppers, do you just go and pick up a bag of cash money? Or do they give you a blank check? I admit, besides getting dangerous felons off the streets, I’ve always wanted to call in a tip to crime stoppers so I could solve this mystery.

Fun Fact!

Fun Fact!

It wasn’t all grime and crime, there were little nuggets of information scattered throughout the paper.

Just Busted Giveaway

Just Busted Giveaway

Oh come on, that’s just some crass, lacking in couth shit there. Plus, I can’t find the fake one although I hope it’s “pedestrian soliciting ride/business”. What, you can’t ask  a fellow citizen for a ride any more? What kind of business? Any business? Be specific, you can’t charge people with these frustratingly vague charges!

I wonder if they run the contest as a kindness, to give those pictured in the paper an out. “Oh no, I wasn’t arrested. Ha! I was the fake mug shot. I can’t believe you didn’t pick up on that. Oh what a riot! Make sure you send it in for the drawing. I hope you win! Oh man, wait until I tell the guys you thought I was really in Just Busted. Classic!”

All in all I have to say this is a publication without much redeeming value. I’d wager most people don’t go into committing a crime thinking they’ll be caught or are in a position where they aren’t thinking clearly (drug addiction, impulsive acts of anger) and the prospect of embarrassment isn’t much of a deterrent at the moment where they are making the decision to commit a crime. I don’t really feel bad for the people involved, if they are guilty, but it just doesn’t seem to be in the best of taste. I won’t buy it again now that my curiosity is satisfied. Too much like watching Jenny Jones. You like it while it’s on, but after you feel somewhat filthy and subhuman.

P.S. I did not find my prosti-ganger in there. I bet she was just Asian and didn’t even look like me. Pabo cop.

Papers like this are beginning to pop up all over the country. There’s one in Shreveport called “The Inquisitor” (they go a step further by re-writing the police reports like news stories…real interesting to read, actually). And you know what’s almost beautiful about this business model? They’ll NEVER run out of stuff to print. Since mugshots and arrest records are public information, there’s virtually no overhead.

    HAW!

That’s awesome. And while I do not necessarily approve of sex offenders (personally, I think they should all rot in jail for the rest of their lives — and I do mean ROT), but it hardly seems fair to slap ‘em on a page that pretty much CALLS them sexual predators.

Oh, wait. No. It’s perfectly fair.

And now I want some tender and tasty FOOD!

I was able to justify buying this piece of filth knowing that the missus would mock it. It really is an offensive piece of work and I don’t buy the whole ‘it’s all a matter of public record anyway’ excuse. By that logic I could put together some handy google map route plans to a few sex offenders homes with handy replenishment stops at guns&ammo stores and publish that. There’s a thin line between disseminating information and incitement.

It’s the sex offenders that get me.
As much as I dislike them I’ve been reading about how trivially easy it is to get listed as a sex offender. Anyone on the sex offender list has already been through trial and sentencing and many will have served the time that the rules of this society dictate is the appropriate punishment. Taking their information, compiling and publishing it and calling that a public service is despicable. The intention of a sex offenders registry is as an aid to law enforcement and not something to be used for salacious and voyeuristic purposes.

It wouldn’t be too much of an stretch to imagine some dingbat deciding to use this information to mount a flyer and poster campaign against the listed offenders. I’ve had callers to my front door try to recruit me onto what amounts to a lynch mob to prevent anther type of undesirable from setting up shop in our neighborhood and those were Good People from a local church. It’s not too hard to imagine this publication taped to a wall as a target list in some defective crusaders house.

I’ll take care of my family and I don’t believe that some drunk idiot who took a piss against a tree near a school and let his wang be seen ten years ago needs to be forced out of my neighborhood so my job is easier. (yes , that’s a completely fictional case study)

This shotgun approach to naming and shaming is admittedly less serious that interring all Japanese immigrants or patting down all muslims at an airport but it comes from the same place and has a lot of the same civil liberties implications.

I wasn’t too thrilled to learn about this paper after I was falsely accused of assault by a person who attacked me in my own house. They sure didn’t print a “charges dropped and arrest record sealed” retraction when the whole thing actually went through the legal process.

I didn’t even mention it to him. I know the paper carries the statement “innocent until proven guilty” so I figured there wasn’t much I could do. It was annoying when friends started calling me to ask why my picture was in the paper and having to explain what happened.

I live in Chattanooga and I also work at a jail. I think that paper was a great idea.. I look at it like this, if you don’t want to be in the paper then don’t go to jail. Stop breaking the law.. I love to look at the paper because it’s amazing to me that people come to jail do one day 6 months or a year and get out go break the law and come right back.. Not only that they go from county to county doing it. I also love the sex offenders page because I want to know at all times who is living near my kids. I have three daughters and a son. So i need to know. I say to the makers of the busted paper good job and continue to do what you are doing.

Just remember that not everyone that is arrested is guilty. It is too easy for someone to accuse an innocent person of a crime just to cause them grief… legal fees, bail money, and their picture in this publication for the world to see. There is a reason that we have a legal system that presumes innocence.

I would have absolutely no problem with this paper if it printed only pictures of criminals once they were convicted.

I think the busted paper is soooo wrong.. I think them putting sex offender and rapist is one thing. That is something a community should know.. But for them to put every single crime a person commits is so crazy. For people to go buy it every week to see who is in it.. You apparently have no life. The people aren’t even charged wit anything yet. It’s going to start with just people getting arrested to people not paying there bills to people everyday business. I think they need to shut down for the vitims, the person mug shot, and the family members.. GET A LIFE. Worry about REAL STUFF.. Like world issue. Not a book that tells you a certain someone didn’t show up to court, or whatever they did.. Really what’s next.. Whose kid gets suspended from school? I’m sure.. My dollar surely won’t be wasted on that piece of crap. There will always be nosey ass people.. Who feel they need to know that john doe hit someone being drunk one night.. Come on people.

I don’t care what nobody say I think this is a great idea.. To say they will soon start a paper about our kids being suspended from school is crazy.. But if your bad ass child is bringing a gun and or drugs to school that is something I would like to know about… Hell put their bad ass in the paper to, so I know who not to let my kids hang with… You people wouldn’t be saying this or taking this paper so light if you or one of your children was sexually assaulted or some of these low lives broke into your house and cars you would be singings a diffrent song.. That is what’s wrong with this world today, people are at the point that if it don’t happen to them it don’t matter. I want to know what’s going on.. And it has nothing to do with being nosey , but all about knowing who, what, why and how… I hope that paper stay around for a long time and as long as it does I will be going to the store with my money and getting one every week.. Like I said before if you don’t want to be in the paper STOP BREAKING THE DAMN LAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For the nosey public to know. Yeah I’m sure when your bad ass kid gets in a fight at school and for the whole city to know about it. That a great thing. What is you reading bout the crap going to change. If someone gets in a fight and gets arressted for it.. Does that mean that person is coming for YOU! No. But keep buyin this bs mag. But who gives a flyin freak who doesn’t make it to there damn court date. Who smokin pot. Or drunk in public. OH Wait you do!! Everybody breaks the law. Pretty soon jaywalkers in the paper. I’m sure lil miss perfect.. Your butt will be in there too. You don’t know what Tomorrow brings. Alot of people are in there for stuff they didn’t do. Or just because some ignorant person calls to police to start drama. Least make sure the person get convicted of the crime before posting it.

Yeah you are right, anybody could go to jail.. So if the day comes for me to go to jail and be put in the paper so be it.. For whatever the reason I or anyone else my go, the same thing goes STOP BREAKING THE LAW…… Yes I do think DUI offenders should be put in the paper because to me they are no different, if they hadn’t been stop by the police they could’ve killed people… Me, you. or one of our children. The not showing up in court could be taken out but everything else I want to know about… Just because my house or my car my not be next on their list of things to break in and take don’t mean I don’t want to know. And yes I do have a life, with a job a husband and kids and I look at this paper at work with my co wokers or at home while my husband and I are cooking or getting our children ready for bed.. Everyone has their own opinion and everybodies will not be the same……….

The only reason a person’s name and picture should be circulated is if they were CONVICTED of a crime (but that would require some research on the part of the publisher). Just because they were arrested does not mean they were guilty. Believe it or not, people do file false reports all the time.
