Men’s Pocky

by Tracy on June 21, 2009

Or, I am such a mean mother I make my child write my blog for me

pocky1

My 13 year old son wanted to have a go at doing a Museum of Snack Food post and since a kid needs a summer job and this is Men’s Pocky, I thought why not? So, without further ado, here is Nicholas’s review of Men’s Pocky.

Mr Pocky Review

You all know Pocky, but for those not in the know, Pocky is a type of desert/snack food from Japan. It’s pretzel stick dipped in milk chocolate, or strawberry flavored cream. But what you may NOT know is that there is, indeed, a Pocky for men.

That’s right. You may, like me, have thought at one point “Pocky is just not manly enough!”. Well now it is, with the advent of Mr. Pocky

Men's Pocky

Men's Pocky

What makes Mr. Pocky for men different than regular Pocky? It has been coated in dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate.

Its not a good idea to lick it, as then the chocolate will melt. It tasted pretty good. Like a crunchier dark chocolate, after you ate a pretzel stick. The aftertaste is…weird. Hard to describe, kinda like darker then dark chocolate. After a few minutes though, the aftertaste becomes a sort of bitter feeling on your tounge. You can also suck it like a lollipop, if you so choose. Also, if you put a small bit in your mouth, and keep the rest out of your mouth, it looks awesome. Not a good idea to eat it outside during a hot day though.

pocky5

I give Mr. Pocky a final score of 8.4 out of 10. Tasty, but the bitterness that kicks in about a minute or two after you eat one is untasty. Also, regular Pocky tastes slightly better.

Thanks Nicholas!

If you can’t find it in your area, You can buy Pocky from Amazon along with a wide assortment of other Japanese candies.

Darker than dark would be a great tag line for men’s pocky. Do you have to eat the hello kitty pockys next?

travit June 21, 2009 at 10:57 pm

Great job, Nicholas. You are talented, just like your Mom.

Now my only question, are there pink chocolate covered Miss Pocky sticks?

Nicholas,

Thanks for this great review.

There’s not enough “manly” snack foods out there so it’s nice to have this revealed to us.

I hope to see more of your reviews here. Also, if you would like to write about what it’s like to write from a young man’s perspective, I’d love to have a guest post from you over at Tumblemoose!

Just let me know, ok?

Cheers!

George

Excellent review, Nicholas!

Being a woman, I’m not allowed to try Men’s Pocky, so I’m glad you were able to review it for me. I’ll stick with milk chocolate — I like it better. Now I just wish they’d come out with a Sweet Tooth’s Pocky and put more chocolate on that darn stick.

Great job Nick!

Now to figure out how to get my kid to write posts for me.

The little market up the street sells Pocky but I’ve never tried it.

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys :D
@Tumblemoose I know, right? Also, I’ll consider it if mom(Tracy as she as known to all of you) says its ok.
@Travit Yes, there is pink Pocky. Just not Miss Pocky. Two kinds actually, Regular pink strawberry, and hello kitty pink strawberry. All the flavors are, quoted from Wikipedia: chocolate, strawberry, and almond. Some of the more unusual flavors include the seasonal flavors of honey (spring) and kiwifruit mango (summer). The bittersweet version of chocolate Pocky is known as Men’s Pocky. Regional flavors of Pocky include grape (Nagano), yūbari melon (Hokkaidō), giant mikan (tangerine, sold in the Kyūshū region), powdered tea azuki bean (Kyoto), Kobe wine (Kobe), and five-fusion berry (Goka). There are also such flavors as banana, coffee, caramel, marble royal milk tea, melon, milk, honey and milk, choco banana, cream cheese, berry, sweet potato, coconut, crush (crunchy cracker pieces in chocolate), pineapple, pumpkin, hazelnut, kurogoma (black sesame), kinako (soy bean flour), marron, Brazilian pudding, mikan, blueberry, and green tea.

Special variations of Pocky include Decorer Pocky (which features extra decorative icing) and Mousse Pocky (which features extra thick, “creamy” mousse-like icing and is more exclusive). Unlike other Pocky variations, Mousse Pocky packages especially contain fewer pieces than regular Pocky with only nine pieces per pack.

Another variation of Pocky is the My Calorie Pocky (マイ カロリー ポッキー, mai karorī pokkī?), which has 1/4 the calories of regular chocolate Pocky.

A related product is Pretz, which is an unglazed version of Pocky, featuring flavors like tomato, pizza, and salad, as well as sweet flavors such as French toast.

Great job Nicholas.

I do the same thing. In fact both of my boys have to write reviews of games and movies and such on the review blog we have for kids. http://betweentalk.com/blog

Good job, Nicholas! Dark chocolate is the way to go, eh?

…and high-fives for putting up a post! Your mom can be proud. I couldn’t be prouder of my 13-yr. old than I am today, but write on dad’s blog? Not a chance! LOL.

Thanks for writing…and keep it up!

Great job, Nicholas. Though I’m not sure how Dark Chocolate equates into manliness. If it were REALLY manly, it ought to be coated in Tabasco sauce or maybe have a beef jerky chewy filling… but chocolate?! I guess it’s just one more difference between the American and Japanese cultures. I have to say, I’ll side with the Japanese on this one. I do like the chocolate.

I have to admit I’ve never heard of these, but I love that your son is participating in your blog.

Great review, Nicholas. I’ll have to investigate these and I’ll definetely want the male version as I have a rather strong affinity for dark chocolate.

Wow, Nicholas, awesome review! I could practically taste the Pocky and I can totally picture myself trying to look awesome with a bit in my mouth and the rest out. I think there should be a follow up with the Pretz, and compare them to Pringle’s Stix.

Congratulations! Your Mom should be very proud.

Heh, you guy’s comments are so hilarious.

@blogger dad I wouldent be suprised if they actually did that. But as it stands, this is only level 2 man. Your idea is level 7. Level 10 would be a beef jerky (Insert favorite sports ball here) filled with red alarm chilli.

Well reviewed. ^^ Feels like reading a post by a food critic (or snack for this matter). Ever thought of running a blog? Seems like you got the knack for it.

You are going to go far young man. I have actually tried the woman’s version of this snack and I agree with your rating! I can see writing talent runs in the family. Bravo Nicholas and I look forward to reading more from you.

I wonder what happens if women eat men’s pocky sticks? I love pocky sticks but can not eat them because of the milk…

Good review – nice job.

Nice review, Nicholas!

I will need to have my husband buy me some of this men’s Pocky. I will then eat it alone in the basement where no one will see.

I must say, for a 13 year-old, you have better grammar than half of my fellow graduates from University.

Pleasant read…didn’t know Men’s Pocky existed. Will have to try next time I go to Tokyo!

Ahh, so THIS is what pocky is…
Funny thing, my friend got me a box of Hello Kitty candy straight from Japan and the only English word on it was pocky. I didn’t know what it was and I left it sealed – but it looks really good in your pics and I think I will go eat some now :)
