My Trip to the Farmer’s Market

by Tracy

Or, I know it looks like a supermarket but the name of the store is Farmer’s Market

iphone 027

I went to the Winchester Farmer’s Market to pick up some rice and stuff and decided to take some pictures. I wish you could really buy glory, that would be awesome.

Please keep in mind these photos were taken with my phone while I was trying to be inconspicuous.

iphone 028

Magic Hoop Super Power! If my German is correct (the only description I could find that was not in Korean was in German) it massages your body while you swivel and shimmy. Hoorah!

iphone 026

2.2 lbs of Tastee Cheese!

iphone 024

I was intrigued by Solomon Gundy, so I looked it up when I got home. According to this chowhound thread, solomon gundy is “very spicy, peppery Jamaican spread made with smoked herrings and scotch bonnet”. Next time I go I’ll buy a jar. My mom makes this spicy dish with anchovies and Korean hot bean paste and chili peppers that’s amazing on rice wrapped in a lettuce leaf, so this sounds good to me.

iphone 023

It’s the essence of artificial!

iphone 022

I very nearly bought this, but couldn’t imagine what crazy things might happened if I were fortified with beef, iron and wine.

iphone 033

Speaking of beef, who knew cow tongues were this big. Do you put them whole on tongue sandwiches? I’m going to find out, because this

oxtongue

From my pressure cooker manual has me intrigued. Most intrigued.

iphone 039

Why bother curdling the beans if you’re just going to uncurdle them again?

Not pictured: things I actually bought. You’ll have to come back later to see those!

    Wow Tracey,

    These pictures make me giggle!
And I thought your Chicken in a Can was unique ;)
I wonder how the Beef, Iron & Wine can be considered a “Nutritive Supplement” though.

Well Tracy, you’re in luck! Not only have I had cow tongue before, but I actually have cooked it before. I think it’s good, but as a disclaimer, I love all organ meats like liver too. Tongue is very tough, so it’s best to boil it for a long time, or use your pressure cooker. Then you slice it in cross sections. My mom always served it with beef gravy. I would think it would be a bit bland on its own.

Mmmmm, cow tongue. If you like, I’m headed back to the land of my ancestors (aka the same town we owned a meat packing plant for years) this week, and I can go ahead and get some cow tongue recipes for you.

I’m intrigued by the mixed essence of artificial ingredients. Maybe you use it when you cook something like tongue that doesn’t have any artificial ingredients. Or maybe you use it to get the curdlings straightened out. Or maybe you pour it on fire ant beds.

You do not serve a whole tongue on a sandwich. You slice it and serve it that way. :) Use it like you would bologna or other lunch meats. Don’t forget to skin it either. I cooked mine in the pressure cooker with some spices. There are a lot of tongue recipes available online.

“Beef, iron & wine” sounds like it could be part of an undiscovered verse of that “what are little girls made of, made of” nursery rhyme.

If these are the things you left behind, I am looking forward to your actual purchases.

There’s an asian market a few blocks from our house that the children just LOVE to go to. They have the craziest things (including these packages of things that look like bugs) that both my wee ones just love to ooh and ah over.

I love to go to the fun markets and browse and try on things, but no thank you to the tongue…I have had enough of cow and beef to last a lifetime…and now at my age they are telling me no to most of it anyway…

@Nathalie I bet if I managed to cook it in the pressure cooker so that it inflated my traffic would go through the roof.

@OpinionatedAnt I bet it’s one of those supplements that makes hair grow on your chest

@Heather B okay i have to ask, are the taste buds pre scraped off? Because that’s what’s holding me back.

@Mike Nichols Essence of Artificial Ingredients sounds so wistful, does it not? Like some sort of Proustian memoir for our age.

@Cuddly see above question about taste buds

@Meredith I think maybe that’s what little boys are made of. Little girls are made of good stuff like asparagus and shrimp risotto!

@Vered It really does! Especially if you have a grocery store that serves a much older population. Our Piggly Wiggly has all sorts of canned and bottled stuff for the older people that grew up not having as much access to fresh food that they couldn’t grow.

@Writer Dad Do they have the live fish in the tank? That’s what my kids love. It’s better than a trip to the zoo!

@Patricia I’m still wavering on the tongue. I might have to try that in a restaurant, because that’s a whole lot of tongue just to have one bite.
