My Mother in Law used to home can chicken. It was great and she had the quart jar packing down to a science. The chickens were cut up and she knew just how to put them in there so a whole chicken would fit.

I'd have rubbed some paprika and garlic powder and just a tiny pinch of salt on the exterior and cooked it long enough to brown it.

Also, the broth is salvageable and usable, you just have to boil it down a bit to strengthen it and add a bit of salt and perhaps pepper. Then it can be thickened with cornstarch to make serviceable, if not great, chicken gravy.

Imagine being a 1950s housewife. Surely this would have been a godsend.

The reason it looks the way it does is because of the natural gelatin in the Chicken stock that comes from the bones. When heated the gelatin will melt.

Well you obviously did not judge this nasty thing by how it looks, because you said that you tasted it...which you deserve a medal for.

Mouth sweats, this is nasty.
