Phoning it in Friday again

by Tracy on March 13, 2009

Or, I’m a huge fan of letting the users make up their own dang content.

bookshelf-001

This is one half of one shelf of my bookcase.

I thought you’d like to look at it to get to know me better.

Please feel free to share observations in comments. It’s open book talk thread day.

BTW, I’ve declared Friday night to be my read a book night. I’m still working on “The Stuff of Thought: Language as a Window into Human Nature” by Steven Pinker that you see in the picture. It’s really fascinating stuff. What are you reading right now?

hahahahahaha

Stiff is next to Dreams From My Father. I don’t know if that means anything but I found it very funny.

Mindless Eating looks good.

I would not be able to handle the titles going in different directions – the upside down books – but maybe that’s part of your system … And I have to organize books by height.

Heh, every time we get one child trained not to pull all the books off the shelves, another one pops up to take his place. Although I must say, while I might feel just a teeny bit sheepish about how disorganized it is, it doesn’t bother me in the way it bothers Mr. “I Have A System” Husband.

I am just glad they aren’t on the floor!

And wow, there is nothing like taking a photo and posting it on the internet to show you how dusty your shelves are! Although I did go run and check and most of it is just stained paint.

I also wanted to point out that I’m NOT the one that throws away the dust covers. That would be Mr “The System” Husband. He considers them clutter.

My bookshelf shares many books in common with yours!
I am currently reading Outliers by Gladwell, having just finished a book called “Wasted,”a memoir by Mark Johnson.

Last week I read a book called “How Starbucks saved my Life.” I don’t know whether I am the most gullible girl in the world, but I loved it and believed it, and found it inspiring!

Unlike the NYtimes I now discover.

Sadly, I’m not reading. I stopped reading books when I started blogging. I try not to worry about it too much – I’m sure I’ll go back to reading books eventually. Maybe when I stop blogging hahaha…

I’m still trying to read Blink. The first chapter made me so huffy I set it aside two weeks ago and haven’t picked it up since.

Instead I’m about to start Simon Winchester’s Bomb, Book and Compass: Joseph Needham and the Great Secrets of China.

Fiction wise I just finished Q&A by Vikas Swarup (the book Slumdog Millionaire was based on). It is much more lighthearted than the film. Also Devil in the Junior League and I am ashamed to say that before I read this book I though the Junior League was some sort of children’s baseball support organisation. Next up is The Butterfly Collector about an Edwardian lepidopterist’s obsession in the Amazon.

Hi Lesley, that Starbucks book sounds interesting although the NYT review makes me think that maybe I will be snarky towards it. I tend to be not so positive as you are.

Hi Vered, I just started reading again. It wasn’t so much the blogging as having babies. My oldest son was extremely placid and easy going and would often play quietly by the sofa while I read. Once he started sleeping through the night, he’d sleep 12 hours straight through and I had tons of time to read. Didn’t really understand how people could be “too tired” to read.

Now I understand. Luckily the littlest one is sleeping better and I know longer collapse in a staring, drooling heap in front of the tv every night.

Hi Jay, I liked the HuffPo book but there wasn’t a ton of useful information for bloggers that have been at it for a while. What I did like was the story of how the HuffPo came to be, discussion about how blogging is changing media and the first person accounts of what various HuffPo authors liked about blogging.

Hi Ming! I can picture very clearly you getting huffy at a book. What was it that made you huffy? I think I’d like to read Q&A.

Tracy! I see two great Steven Pinker books on your shelf. I love you now! Career Renegade and Richard Dawkins – good stuff. I have about 30 or 40 books on my shelves that I can’t get to. I keep buying them. Every time I read one book I go to B&N and walk out with five more. Sorry to go nuts on you but I love books and I love people who read. So few do anymore. It’s really sad.

Tracey,

I enjoyed looking at your book shelf. Whenever I visit someone, I always check out their books. It’s fascinating to me to see what people read. I love see books, like the ones on your shelf, that look like someone cared for them. This means they look slightly worn, but in a book that’s a good thing for means someone is using them!

I love books…the way they smell, their paper, the covers….just everything about them. I’m not so fond of online books, however, as they miss something for me. Thanks for the post and the peek at what’s on your shelf :~)

oops…sorry about adding the “e” in your name. I should know better being a Sara and always having an “h” added to mine :~)

I have been meaning to pick up Obama’s books. I wonder how they are. I’m currently reading Randy Pausch’s “The Last Lecture.” It’s very inspiring!

I love the title “The Stuff of Thought”. That alone makes me want to read it!
