It’s Can-Do 1980′s Style People Time Again

by Tracy on March 11, 2009

Or, once again I feel the need to exorcise negativity from my life by invoking the genius that is Irene Cara.

You might have noticed that this is not the video from the soundtrack of the hit 1980s movie Flashdance. No, this is the cover version by the relatively unknown in America DJ Bobo.

I was going to embed the Flashdance version, but I came across this one and thought: This is even better! Because who is better at expressing the spirit of can-do, don’t give a flying fig about what anyone else thinks, I’m going to take my passion and make it happen than DJ Bobo?

You know, because I’m sure people told him, hey, you! Swiss boy! Shouldn’t you be staying in your chalet making chocolates and fondue and being neutral? But he said “Achtung baby, look what I can do”. I can sing, I can dance, I can rap, I can dress up in a gladiator suit and make a video with Irene Cara and the people will love it!

And they did.

I tried to recap American Idol this season, but my heart wasn’t in it any more. The older I get, the more my heart soars just seeing people get up there and try. I don’t even hate as much stuff about my message board any more. The more I try and push myself, the less willing I am to take a shot at somebody. For what? Not living up to my expectations? If nothing else, do you know what sort of pressure that puts me under? If I can’t give somebody else a break, it’s not very likely I’ll give myself one either, is there?

Not really sure what I’ll do with this new found, not hatey-ness. There’s not much chance this will morph into Puppies! Rainbows! Kittens! but I know what I want to be and that is the kind of person who inspires and energizes, even if she’s talking about a can of pig brains in milk gravy.

I’d like to take a second to thank Jay Frawley of Inner Noodle for his fabulous post: How to save the World. There is something very genuine about Jay, you can feel his energy beaming through his words and he wrote what I needed to hear today.

And to close, more DJ Bobo!

It’s my life, I live it on my own

Welcome to the danger zone.

And you know what, I don’t care what anyone says, I am MOVED by that.
