I’m going on the Shangri-La Diet

by Tracy on February 22, 2009

And giving away a free copy of the book to one random commenter!

shangriladiet

The Shangri-La Diet has been a hot topic of discussion on the IHMMB forums with many members reporting good results. Since I love a bandwagon and I would like to lose 10-15 pounds by this summer, I thought I’d give it a whirl even though I am highly skeptical. Okay, I must correct myself, my first thought was to do roll-eyes, but then my good friend TwoHands said she was going to do it, and that’s when I decided to do it, too.

If you haven’t heard about the Shangri-La Diet it is a diet plan conceived by Seth Roberts, a UC Berkeley professor of psychology. Basically, through self experimentation he found that ingesting oil or sugar water you could change your body’s set point and lose weight. His theory is foods with very little flavor break the connection between flavor and calories and allow you to lower the weight your body wants you to be, thus decreasing your appetite. I think I got that right. He explains the science behind it in the book, which I did read, but I didn’t quite get it all the first go around.

Does it work? A lot of people say it does. Is it scientifically valid? That seems to be up for debate, however I haven’t read anything that says it’s out and out dangerous so why not? Worse comes to worse, I gain a few pounds and have to go on Jenny Craig.

I’ll be blogging about my experiences a couple of times a week and updating daily on the IHMMB Body Electric forum. Two Hands will also be blogging her experience, and many other IHMMB members are trying Shangri-La and talking about it on the forum. BTW, if you are looking for support in your weight loss/fitness journey, The Body Electric is the place to be!

We’re going to be giving away one copy of the latest, revised edition of The Shangri-La Diet: The No Hunger Eat Anything Weight-Loss Plan and a bottle of extra light olive oil to one lucky reader.

Sure, I’d like to give it a try. I figure with a 3yo and an infant it’s easier to eat oil and sugar water than to prepare real food, right?

I’ve heard about this diet – it sounds a little wacky but supposedly the science is real! I’d love to try it.

I need to do something. I lost about 35 lbs right after my baby -the first five months – nursing. Then over the past two years I’ve lost about 27 more very slowly but surely. In fact recently, I was just about to drop into another set of numbers – I won’t say which one! I was kind of excited about it. But last month, beginning of January I literally went up 15 lbs in 2 days and now I’m up 20 from then. I did nothing different those two days. I eat healthy choice meals – not the best choice but with a toddler an easy one. My husband brings home food occasionally but this has never caused me to gain and certainly not that quickly. I’ve been steadily losing very slowly. Until then. And it wasn’t a factor then. I use Comcast on Demand for exercise programs and walk a lot with my toddler and his stroller. So either I have some huge tumor that grew in two days and kept growing or my metabolism is WAY out of whack!

So I’d try it. Must be good timing too, because I had a spoonful of olive oil before my last meal – heard it was good for digestion!

I don’t have the willpower to just cut down on the amount I eat or to eliminate those pesky calorie laden snacks. So I need an alternative. Maybe this is it.
