Baconnaise – A Review and a Contest!

by Tracy on February 5, 2009

Or, finally you can get the best parts of a BLT in spreadable form without having to eat any pesky fiber parts

Baconnaise

Baconnaise

Note: Our contest is over, but the folks at BaconSalt are running a promotion to get free Baconnaise for a year.

I was alerted to Baconnaise by a thread on the IHMMB forums and knew right then and there that I had to have some. It’s a bacon flavored spread made by the same guys that brought us Bacon Salt. Right now, it has a limited distribution in brick and mortar stores, but Amazon has a 3 pack for just under $14 and I have Prime 2 day shipping, so it was all systems go for an impulse bacon flavored spread buy!

I knew the jars would be here on Wednesday and my plan was to go to the grocery on Wednesday morning for buns, lettuce and tomatoes. Alas, one of my children had an ominous tummy ache that made traveling outside the house inadvisable so I asked my husband to pick up the buns from Circle K on the way home from work and I would just serve them topped with caramelized onions. Yum.

Only he forgot the buns and I had a super crazy day and forgot that I totally suck at making my own burger patties. They start off the right size but shrink down into puny, sad little pucks of beef. They are still tasty and juicy but leave a lot of empty bun space. And I was frazzled so everything was a mess and I dropped half of the oven baked fries on the floor.

My ugly but tasty baconnaise burgers

But you know what? The baconnaise made it all worth it. It was smoky! It was rich! It was bacon-y! It was as if somebody scraped off my favorite parts of the BLT and whirred it in a blender and put it in a jar. My only complaint was that it was just a bit on the salty side, but that is easily remedied by using it sparingly. It’s not salty inedible, more like dang, should I be eating something so deliciously salty?

It was good dipped in the oven fries, although they were kind of cold by the time I got to them.  Not the baconnaise’s fault. It’s a bit rich and strongly bacony for me to use as a straight dip, I’d probably cut it with something else

This morning we had a cheeseburger left over and I thought you know what? I haven’t had a fried egg topped burger in forever! So I loaded up a Wonderbread bun (all they had at the gas station) with the baconnaise, the cheeseburger, the leftover onions and a once over easy egg.

And you know what? It was delicious in a wow, I probably shouldn’t have had donuts this morning if I was going to eat this, too sort of way.

BTW, I had to take it outside to photograph because everywhere I stood my own shadow was on the burger! I really need to learn food photography!

I made Baconnaise California Rolls! They Were Yum.

How about spread on pancakes and rolled up to eat on the go?

Nancy February 6, 2009 at 6:22 pm

I think it would be great on a ham and cheese sandwich.

Nancy February 6, 2009 at 6:22 pm

How about spread on a corndog?

Nancy February 6, 2009 at 6:23 pm

You could spread it instead of butter on fresh corn on the cob!

Nancy February 6, 2009 at 6:23 pm

I think it would be good in tuna salad!

Nancy February 6, 2009 at 6:24 pm

Oh… how about putting it on a baked potato! Yumm!

adrienne Gordon February 6, 2009 at 9:05 pm

on a cheeseburger

Matt | Small Biz Bee February 6, 2009 at 9:33 pm

In-N-Out burger’s “Double-Double” Animal style, with a slathering of your own Baconaise would make that meal and other worldly experience.

Marilyn Wons February 6, 2009 at 11:38 pm

I would use baconnaise on my morning bagel!

Andi February 7, 2009 at 2:03 am

I’d try it on chicken salad!

Tracy February 7, 2009 at 2:11 am

I would definitely use it in all the ways mentioned here but I would also add that I make a really mean Turkey Milanese, when I make it, everyone wants seconds and thirds, so I make tons of it, when I have leftover I use it to make Sandwiches the next day and I have always added Bacon and Caramelized onions to the Sandwich, so this would be perfect, it would enhance the taste and save me a step too, what’s not to love? ;)

Tom February 7, 2009 at 4:09 am

This definitely belongs on a baked potato!

Tracey Byram February 7, 2009 at 5:58 am

What??? A bacon flavored spread? How did I not know about this? I consider bacon the world’s most perfect food. I really must be slipping. I would use this on burgers, fries, eggs, sandwiches. Heck, what wouldn’t I put this on? OK, maybe not on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Maxine February 7, 2009 at 7:24 am

Didn’t know this existed – sounds wonderful. Can’t wait to try it.

I HATE frying bacon, but love the taste. I have a dip recipe that calls for bacon and mayo….2 ingredients in that could be combined AND I don’t have a mess to clean up in the kitchen!

mindy February 7, 2009 at 8:14 am

i would use it for a blt but without the b thanks for the giveaway

sally wess February 7, 2009 at 10:03 am

janeh February 7, 2009 at 10:30 am

I think Baconnaise would be great as a sauce/dip for grilled shrimp…….and also for beef tenderloin. What a wonderful idea…….!!!!

Melanie February 7, 2009 at 10:39 am

I’s love to try this on a nice turkey sandwich, or maybe mix it in with a little mashed potatoes. Hmmm…give me a while and I’ll be I can think up quite a bit of things I’d like to try. This is such a great idea -how did anyone not think of this sooner?
Thanks for the giveaway!

While I love the taste of bacon, I no longer eat pork so I was pleasantly suprised to see that Baconaise and their other products are Kosher! So many things to try it on…maybe I would start with a scrambled egg sandwich…but then it would be great on a cheeseburger too!

3boyzmom February 7, 2009 at 1:25 pm

this looks delicious!! I know my husband and kids would flip for it! We would use it on sandwiches, burgers, hmmm..maybe as a dip for fries or chips, in tortilla wraps, ooh and in potato or macaroni salad..yum!

I’d use Baconnaise on a variation of the BLT sandwich, minus the bacon.

Jackie February 7, 2009 at 3:26 pm

I’d use it on a turkey sandwich (sort of like a Turkey Club, but I wouldnt need the bacon because I’d use Baconnaise). Thanks for the review and giveaway…and I enjoyed reading!

Jackie February 7, 2009 at 3:28 pm

This might be good on a club sandwich. Put some on texas toast with some turkey and ham maybe? Served warm, of course. My husband loves BLTs so he would definitely love Baconnaise!

Karen Gonyea February 8, 2009 at 11:09 am

Sounds awesome !! I’d put it on burgers :)

DeeAnn S February 8, 2009 at 12:00 pm

My favorite sandwich in the world is BLT on white toast with extra mayo (FF on the side please). Sooooooo, the extra mayo would have an extra bit of bacon in it making it extra yummy! Makes sense to me. Besides, one can never have enough bacon. Oh, did I say I wasn’t watching my fat intake?! HAHAHA Thanks for the giveaway.

Lauralee Hensley February 8, 2009 at 12:46 pm

I’d like to try it on top of fried apples and onions. My husband tends to buy too many apples at a time, and we often end up with ones going soft. Too soft to really enjoy eating fresh, but I peel and core them. Then I cut out any overly soft or browning parts. Next cut them up in bite size pieces and cut up an onion (I perfer sweet onions, but any kind will do). Next put a tiny bit of oil (I use canola) in a pan, add in the apples and onions and cook over high to medium high heat until onions get golden in color, stirring often. Add spices of choice if desired. I think the Baconnaise would taste great as a topping on the fried apples and onions.

Baba February 8, 2009 at 12:49 pm

I would love to try this on toast, ritz crackers, and baked potatoes!
