Baconnaise – A Review and a Contest!

by Tracy

Or, finally you can get the best parts of a BLT in spreadable form without having to eat any pesky fiber parts

Baconnaise

Baconnaise

Note: Our contest is over, but the folks at BaconSalt are running a promotion to get free Baconnaise for a year.

I was alerted to Baconnaise by a thread on the IHMMB forums and knew right then and there that I had to have some. It’s a bacon flavored spread made by the same guys that brought us Bacon Salt. Right now, it has a limited distribution in brick and mortar stores, but Amazon has a 3 pack for just under $14 and I have Prime 2 day shipping, so it was all systems go for an impulse bacon flavored spread buy!

I knew the jars would be here on Wednesday and my plan was to go to the grocery on Wednesday morning for buns, lettuce and tomatoes. Alas, one of my children had an ominous tummy ache that made traveling outside the house inadvisable so I asked my husband to pick up the buns from Circle K on the way home from work and I would just serve them topped with caramelized onions. Yum.

Only he forgot the buns and I had a super crazy day and forgot that I totally suck at making my own burger patties. They start off the right size but shrink down into puny, sad little pucks of beef. They are still tasty and juicy but leave a lot of empty bun space. And I was frazzled so everything was a mess and I dropped half of the oven baked fries on the floor.

But you know what? The baconnaise made it all worth it. It was smoky! It was rich! It was bacon-y! It was as if somebody scraped off my favorite parts of the BLT and whirred it in a blender and put it in a jar. My only complaint was that it was just a bit on the salty side, but that is easily remedied by using it sparingly. It’s not salty inedible, more like dang, should I be eating something so deliciously salty?

It was good dipped in the oven fries, although they were kind of cold by the time I got to them.  Not the baconnaise’s fault. It’s a bit rich and strongly bacony for me to use as a straight dip, I’d probably cut it with something else

This morning we had a cheeseburger left over and I thought you know what? I haven’t had a fried egg topped burger in forever! So I loaded up a Wonderbread bun (all they had at the gas station) with the baconnaise, the cheeseburger, the leftover onions and a once over easy egg.

And you know what? It was delicious in a wow, I probably shouldn’t have had donuts this morning if I was going to eat this, too sort of way.

BTW, I had to take it outside to photograph because everywhere I stood my own shadow was on the burger! I really need to learn food photography!

I made Baconnaise California Rolls! They Were Yum.

Devilled eggs are one of my favorite foods ever, and with Baconaise, I bet I could make them even better! Mmmm

(I’ve been waiting for this contest!)

And the other thing I really want to do you have to either thoroughly make fun of me for or accept as the pure genius it is.

When I was growing up, we always served our Grilled Cheese Sandwiches with a dollup of Mayo or Miracle Whip to dip it in. (yes, I know the hatred towards Miracle Whip, I still like it) (and yes, I know how repulsive that can sound, but it’s good I promise)

I want to make a wonderful grilled cheddar cheese sandwich on one of those multigrain breads with all the weird little seed bits, and then completely negate any possible benefits of multigrain bread by dunking the delectable concoction into Baconaise.

I would spread it on a really good bread like Milton’s white as an outside for grilled cheese instead of butter or oil!

I want it on a potato in many ways. Mashed, baked, crashed, fries, latkes, etc.

I’d use it to make a bacony ranch dressing to put on a salad and for a dip for fried mushrooms.

    MissesR here~

This sounds like a delicious way to enjoy a wrap. I would lather it on a wrap with tomato & lettuce!

I enjoy turkey & cheese with lettuce on a wrap and would also include it as the spread instead of mayo.

I would also use it in place of mayo, making egg salad, I bet that is tantalizing!

    I’m sad that I can’t enter the contest :(

I would use it instead of regular mayo in a tuna sandwich.

  • Lesley

At this point all I can tell you is that I must have some.
I do think baconnaise spread on pizza dough, topped with tomatoes and cheese and then put in a hot oven for ten minutes would be awesome though.

My favorite food is grilled cheese and tomato sandwiches. This can only be improved with addition of baconnaise. In fact, I think I need to do this even if the baconnaise is not free.

Would it be wrong to dip bacon in it? Yeah, that would probably be wrong… :shifty eyes:

  • Kassandra

Cook’s Illustrated has a wonderful Cauliflower Gratin recipe. I’d 86 the fresh thyme and add the baconnaise to the creamy cheese sauce, fold in the blanched cauliflower, and then top with the buttered bread crumbs.

I don’t have any original ideas, but everything already mentioned sounds good. All forms of bread, meat and veggies would be improved with this. Pasta salad hasn’t been mentioned yet, has it? The only things I can think of that might not be good with bacon flavor would be fruit or chocolate, and even then I’m not positive.

I’m not big on mayo, but some mustard/bacon combo would be great. I love to make turkey and ham paninis but am too lazy to throw some bacon on it. Bacon/mustard would fix that in a jiffy.

Now thanks to your post I have to have french fries and a burger for dinner.

Could you imagine this in potato salad? Yummae. You’re Southern so I trust you know how to make it.

I’d mix with cream then churn in an icecream machine until frozen and serve as a savoury banana split with battered deep fried bananas and grilled corn wheels drizzled with apple syrup.

I would use as a substitute for mayo in me world famous garlic bread:

Sourdough bread, speread with butter and copiuos garlic. Add layer of Baconnaise. Top with Parmesan, garnish with chopped fresh parsley – Pop it under the broiler until bubbly golden brown.

    Cheers!
