My first thought on reading that this, the last known surviving female Yangtze giant soft-shell turtle failed to mate with any of the last three surviving males was “Really? Her? She can’t get any? And she’s only 80 years old!” I should probably make a donation or something somewhere, though in fairness to me, I have been known to mock cute animals like panda bears and baby deer, too.

You can watch a very informative video, here at the New York Times to learn more about the turtles and how 1 in 4 mammal species are in danger of extinction.

I also spent far too much of the day trying to think of a tasteful joke about inbreeding, because of this article in the Daily Mail, “Evolution stops here: Future Man will look the same, says scientist” which states:

‘Almost everywhere, inbreeding is becoming less common. In Britain, one marriage in 50 or so is between members of a different ethnic group, and the country is one of the most sexually open in the world,’ Professor Jones added.

I am sorry to say I failed, probably because I’m really bummed that this is about as good as it gets for us. Maybe we should try breeding with the giant soft shelled turtle, normally I am against chimeras, but these are desperate times for all concerned, horrible desperate times.
