I had actually written another piece for the Beautiful Fraud, but I have found it impossible over the last three weeks to go back and finish it. I finally acknowledged to myself that this block will only pass if I write what I am feeling, even if it is much more personal than I intended to be in only my third piece. This is both about my favorite film, and about why certain films become favorites.

I am interviewing for new gigs at the moment. It’s disheartening, exciting, encouraging and frightening all at the same time. I am often asked what my favorite film is, and of course I have the answer prepared, together with the glib answer to the follow-up question. However I was pondering this question seriously this morning after a particularly good meeting, and I realized that part of the reason The Fabulous Baker Boys is my favorite film is precisely the reason that this meeting went well. Most of us have one single internal conflict that defines many of our life choices. If we can resolve that conflict, then we might find peace, happiness, contentment, and this meeting seemed to offer me the chance to do that.
