Schoko-Bananen

Natürliche mit Chiquita™ Bananen!

Schoko-Bananen are made in Austria. According to the back of the box, they are “Chocolate bananas, soft creamy banana mousse coated with plain chocolate”. They are shelf stable, that should have been enough warning for me there. I do not like bananas, shelf stable banana food products I like even less. The smell of bananas makes me retch. I do, however, like soft, creamy mousse.

The ingredients aren’t too alarming, except for the presence of a gelling agent and an emulsifier. Doesn’t that seem like overkill? What could this do to your insides? Constipation is one very real possibility, I would think.

They also have chocolate strawberries and oranges! Just like at the fancy candy store at the mall only instead of real fruit, it’s emulsified and gelled essence of fruit!

Usually I present a full box of whatever treat I am reviewing but as you can see, the family got into this one first. It’s okay, I think you get the idea.

And um, yeah, does that look like creamy banana mousse to you? No, it looks rather like some sort of dang marshmallowy emulsified gelled substance, does it not? And that’s what it tasted like, as well, a too sour, chewy, banana-y flavored middle with a lackluster chocolate coating. Blech. Oh! You know what it tasted like? A banana circus peanut coated in low grade chocolate. Seriously foul. I can not dis-recommend this strongly enough.

Talk about odd snack foods in the IHMMB forums!

That does not look like a chocolate covered banana, that looks like something you would buy in a practical joke shop to recreate the pool scene in Caddyshack.

Hm. They should have used good chocolate. I think everything is better coated in really good chocolate.

They really screwed you over on that mousse BS, girl. I probably would have picked off and eaten the chocolate shell and planted the fake bananas in the yard, in the hopes of growing an emulsified gel tree someday.

Bummer. It had such potential.

At least it wasn’t German, as I had orginally guessed. My dh gets testy when people make fun of German food products.

It tastes like a banana circus peanut covered in low-grade chocolate. Good description. Now I know I don’t want any and I know exactly why! I have a feeling my kids would inhale them though.

In fact they ARE from Germany… and know what? They are disgusting. I never understood why people eat this combination of chemicals and really bad chocolate.

I miss the function for editing posts… nvm – I thought they were made in Germany, but you’re right, produced in Austria. But you can find them in every German supermarket.

Hi Phillip, I haven’t figured out how to install the edit comments function for readers yet, I’ll have to look into it when I get caught up.

Funny thing, at one of the large supermarkets here, they have a fairly good international section. I imagine for expats living in Memphis. In the German section they have the Shoko Bananas and Oranges! Seems a funny choice to me, but eh, maybe some people would miss them.
