Spotlight on April’s Trivia Winner paxsarah

Every month dozens of IHMMB members battle it out to find out who is the Queen (or King) of all Trivia. This month’s winner is paxsarah; we had the chance to interview her and some of her competition to find out what it takes to claw your way to the top of the trivia ranks and what others are willing to do to get there.

Congratulations on being the winner for the second time! How does it feel to win a trivia contest that many feel is unfairly biased towards geeky Stephen King fans?

It feels pretty damn good, thank you very much. Most people don’t take the time to read the entire Dark Tower series simply in the pursuit of trivia excellence, but as you can see, it certainly paid off for me. I also found a quick read through the Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract to be very valuable. But one of these days, I’ll finally be able to afford my Monster Truck of Destruction, and it will all have been worth it.

How do you mentally prepare yourself for each round of trivia? Do you do warm up exercises? Meditation? And is there any truth to the rumor that you use the massive mainframe computer in your university’s physics department to shave vital seconds off your playing time?

During quiet moments, I do focus on a large poster of a question mark hanging over my computer monitor, which not only reminds me to continually hone my trivia skills, but has the added bonus of being the punchline to a Unitarian Universalist joke. I also work out throughout the day with my GripMaster hand exerciser, because of the speed element that’s been introduced by some of my competitors. (We don’t do any kind of testing for performance-enhancing substances, do we?) I don’t think the readership of IHMMB.com possesses the necessary security clearance for me to disclose my exact hardware configuration, so I cannot confirm or deny that last rumor.

Does it bother you when people say things like “She might have won some stupid internet trivia game but at least I have a blog! A blog with as many as 10 subscribers at a time!” Does it put things in perspective for you? Huh, does it geek girl? Hmmm. TEN SUBSCRIBERS!!

Ten subscribers? Well…that is impressive.

Do you think you will win again this month? What do you think about the rumor that DiscoPanda and FullCream are going to start a coalition of the NotAmerican and work together to overthrow you?

As you can see, the statistics show that I do better during the shorter months – I’m more of a sprinter, see. I’ll try to hold my own during the grueling 31-day month that is May, but my calculations indicate that I may not see the top of the leaderboard again until June.

As for the NotAmerican coalition, it really saddens me that it’s come to this. Or wait – maybe it makes me happy! What better way to foster global understanding than to unite against a common foe? Or something like that. In any case, I’m just glad I could bring people together.

Thank you for doing this interview, it was very generous of you to put down the geek lit to make the time to talk to us.

I also had the chance to talk to some other trivia players and find out what they thought of their competition and their plans for making their dreams of winning trivia a reality.

I asked them all these two questions: How do you feel about paxsarah winning this month and you being the notwinner? And what is your strategy to be the winner for May’s trivia competition? Here are their answers.

Coconuts: As the owner/operator of the trivia contest, I am appalled that Sarah has had the nerve to win twice! Don’t these people know they’re supposed to allow me to win each and every day? BAH! My Strategy for May is going to be to switch it to Sports: Baseball: Difficult for the entire month, and to play with a copy of Baseball for Dummies in front of me!

I wonder how her strategy will change knowing paxsarah has anticipated this and is already beefing up on her knowledge of America’s pastime? And what will the Coalition of the NotAmerican think of this? Will they cry Foul? Will they even know that is a punny thing to say? Only time will tell!

TheRaven: How do you feel about paxsarah winning trivia? How do you feel about not winning?

nevermore

What is your strategy to be the winner for May’s trivia competition?

nevermore

If only trivia answers could be given in the form of a YouTube link, what heights might our feathered friend reach? I only hope we will one day have the opportunity to find out.

travit: I do not buy the pax part of her name. She is clearly out for blood when it comes to trivia. She will stop at nothing to be the champion.

My only hope for May is if Coco puts up more fluff topics about celebrities. That and performance enhancing drugs.

Poor, sweet, bitter travit, I think she might do well to join the PerezHilton trivia tournament.

Rene: Well, I have pretty much given up on winning as long as Paxsarah, DiscoPanda, and FullCream continue to play . I don’t think my brain can go any faster, so I am just going to admit that I am not the smartest or fastest person on IHMMB. I know that will come as a shock to many! biggrin.gif

I think my only chance at this point is bribing Coconuts to do a religion month.

But is trivia really about who is the fastest or smartest? Or is it about who has connections to giant mainframe computers at their workplace? I think I know the answer.

I rawk at trivia. Really I do. I have the nickname of “Keeper of Useless Information” which I earned in my tenure in Iraq for my keen ability to know the weirdest stuff. I think I’ll have to start playing. :)

I’m still miffed that the link to the trivia site hasn’t been reposted. I think it’s a conspiracy.

Sorry Barb, that came out snarkier than I meant.

Clearly, Barb would suck at trivia.

The zillion and oneth time is the charm! And Barb could still rawk at trivia. Finding the link is useful sleuthing. Trivia is all about the trivial, yo.
