Twelve, Count Them, Twelve Plump Tomatoes

That’s what goes into the new gourmet ketchup Heinz is introducing in the U.K. in two weeks. Heinz describes it as:

“the ideal condiment for families who want a more sophisticated table sauce to match their palate,”

And the ingredient list does sound fancy

“12 plump tomatoes, spices, sea salt, Demerara sugar, cayenne pepper and lemon juice.”

It will cost three times as much as plain Heinz and there are no plans to make it available in the U.S.

I don’t know about the rest of y’all but I started snickering at “sophisticated table sauce” and was rolling by the time “Demerara sugar” was mentioned. This does, however, disprove my childhood theory that “catsup” was the fancier, Richie Rich style spelling of ketchup.

Doncha know Americans aren’t sophisticated enough for ketchup that doesn’t come in green or purple?

I suggest an IHMMB review of this product. I’m sure those Irish connections can hook you guys up with a bottle of this stuff. Now, what kind of meal does one eat gourmet ketchup with? *That* is the question.
